A Message from the Parish Government
Our most historic and largest industry continues to be farming and ranching, with an average annual business of $300 million. Research and technology continue to advance the agricultural industry. We have also made great strides with green and sustainable technologies as evidenced by our parish visitor information center which is powered partially by wind and solar energy. Also, the landfill operated by the St. Landry Parish Solid Waste Commission is one of three landfills in the United States in which the methane gases are captured and processed for the purpose of fueling both Solid Waste and government vehicles. Both venues have been featured nationally and have become destinations for educational programs across the country.
Individuals, local and beyond, are beginning to appreciate the inherent way of life in St. Landry Parish. A cultural economy is becoming a norm for our parish. This way of life has become the attraction for much of tourism. The attraction is “us and the way we live.” Cultural and arts businesses have begun to fill the empty storefronts.
We are a parish filled with opportunity to improve locally and as a part of a regional plan. The citizens of our parish have signaled a new spirit and attitude, as illustrated by their overwhelming historic support of the road tax referendum this past October. To support the way of life that we desire to have is not free. The cost of awaiting free resources is unaffordable if we wish to continue to succeed.
