What SpaceX’s $100 Billion Louisiana Investment Could Mean for St. Landry Parish

The announcement that SpaceX plans to invest $100 billion in a new Starbase Louisiana facility in Vermilion Parish is big news for Louisiana. It is also something St. Landry Parish should be paying close attention to. While the facility will not be located in St. Landry Parish, the impact of an investment of this size will not be limited to Vermilion Parish. Louisiana Economic Development describes the project as a historic investment that will help establish Louisiana as a major center for next generation aerospace. The facility, planned for the Pecan Island area of Vermilion Parish, is expected to include five launch complexes, 10 launch pads, propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing facilities and employee housing.

Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2027, with the first launch targeted as soon as 2029.

The numbers alone are impressive. SpaceX is expected to create approximately 3,000 direct jobs over the next 10 years, with an average annual salary of about $92,600. Louisiana Economic Development also estimates approximately 8,100 additional indirect jobs.
