Eunice

Explore Eunice, a Cultural Celebration of Life

Occupying the western edge of St. Landry Parish lies Eunice, a welcoming community featuring a dynamic combination of bountiful landscapes and lively culture. As the Prairie Cajun Capital of the World, Eunice is a vista of flat grasslands, crawfish farms and shimmering rice paddies. The fertile ground supports an agricultural center led by crawfish production, while a significant economic impact comes from oil field services and manufacturing of oil industry equipment. While the residents of Eunice are a hard-working community, they also know how to enjoy life!

Music Intertwined in Culture

Eunice is known for magnificent celebrations, specifically centered around music. Visiting the town’s Cajun Music Hall of Fame and Museum is a vibrant experience through time. Immersing oneself in live, definitive melodies of the local culture is possible every Saturday morning at the traditional Savoy Music Jam. Attending the Eunice Community Concert Band & Choir Christmas concert is an incredible experience, being less of a talent show and more of a cultural exchange. Talented area residents perform as a concert band, adult choir and children's chorus. Whether you prefer to sit and listen or get up and dance, Eunice’s music and history will move you.

Characterized by Cultural Customs

The impact of a dynamic historical past runs through Eunice today. Courir de Mardi Gras, referred to locally as “the real Mardi Gras,” occurs locally each spring as a unique cultural custom of live music and Cajun cuisine, culminating with reenactments of traditions dating to medieval France. The beautiful French language is kept alive through informal gatherings at La Table Française de Eunice at the Eunice Depot Museum. Park rangers and local experts offer visitors a unique glimpse into Cajun lifestyles at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center and Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Participants go beyond the displays and exhibits of a typical museum through instructional and educational demonstrations of the region’s music, cuisine and culture.

Balanced Opportunities

Life in Eunice heavily includes education and athletics. High school students are introduced to career possibilities after graduation at the Eunice Career & Technical Center and Washington Career & Technical Center. Those seeking post-secondary education are fortunate to have  Louisiana State University Eunice (LSUE), a comprehensive, two-year institution offering a well-rounded experience for students and the community alike. Educational departments in Health Science, Business Technology and Arts & Sciences provide an intentional personal experience, boasting a 21:1 student-to-teacher ratio for the overall enrollment of about 3,000 students. The athletics programs complement education perfectly, with 13 NJCAA national championships delivered by the baseball and softball teams since 2006.
