What is the BIG Program?

The Building Improvement Grant (BIG) program operates as a reimbursement grant, requiring a dollar-for-dollar match from recipients, made possible through a partnership between the City of Opelousas, the Opelousas Downtown Development District, and Opelousas Main Street.

Who is eligible to apply for the BIG Program?

The program is available to eligible business and property owners located within the district. Applicants must be prepared to provide a dollar-for-dollar match and to complete improvements that enhance the overall quality and vitality of the downtown area.

How much funding can a business apply to use for improvements?

Applicants may request up to $10,000 in funding, provided the business or property owner invests an equal or greater amount in the project.

What types of improvements are supported?

Funding may be used for a range of exterior and structural upgrades, including façade improvements, restoration work, roofing, lighting, and other permanent enhancements. These improvements are intended to preserve downtown's character while supporting modern business needs.
