Thoroughbred Sale Highlights Opelousas’ Growing Role in Louisiana’s Equine Economy

As the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association prepares for its annual sale, the event will once again bring breeders, owners, trainers, buyers and equine industry professionals to Opelousas, reinforcing the city’s growing role as a destination for Louisiana’s horse industry.

The annual sale will be held Tuesday September 1, 2026 at the Louisiana Equine Sales and Event Center, located on Harry Guilbeau Road in Opelousas. The facility has become an important piece of the community’s economic development infrastructure, providing a dedicated location for equine sales while also creating opportunities to host other events, meetings and activities throughout the year.

That investment is particularly significant given St. Landry Parish’s designation as the Equine Capital of Louisiana and Opelousas’ designation as the Horse Capital of Louisiana. These distinctions recognize an industry that has been part of the area’s identity for generations, but they also present an opportunity to build on that history as an economic asset.

Central St. Landry Economic Development District Chairman Frank “Buddy” Helton said having a facility capable of hosting major equine events is important to maintaining and expanding that economic opportunity.

“Having the Equine Center here gives us the ability to keep these types of events in Opelousas and provide a place where the horse industry can continue to grow,” Helton said. “It is an investment in an industry that has been part of St. Landry Parish for generations, and we want to make sure we have the facilities and infrastructure to support it.”

CSLEDD purchased the Louisiana Equine Sales and Event Center and 23 adjoining acres in 2024, subsequently investing in improvements and upgrades to the facility. The district has viewed the property not simply as a venue, but as an economic-development asset that can help attract equine-related activity and visitors to the area.

From an economic development perspective, the impact of an event such as the LTBA sale extends well beyond the horses changing hands. Visitors coming to Opelousas spend money on lodging, restaurants, fuel, retail and other local services. The equine industry itself also supports a network of specialized businesses, including veterinarians, farriers, trainers, breeders, feed suppliers and transportation providers.

The Equine Center also expands the community’s ability to host events that bring people into Opelousas. In addition to equine sales, the facility is available for receptions, corporate meetings and other gatherings, creating additional opportunities to generate activity at the site throughout the year.

The LTBA sale is therefore more than an annual gathering of horse industry professionals. It is a showcase of an industry that is deeply rooted in St. Landry Parish and an example of how existing community assets can be leveraged to create economic activity.

For Opelousas, the opportunity is to continue turning its equine heritage into economic momentum. With the Equine Center providing the infrastructure, the Horse Capital designation providing recognition and events such as the LTBA sale bringing visitors and industry professionals to the community, Opelousas has a strong foundation on which to build its future in the equine economy.
