Fairy Tale City

Opelousas has once again earned a place on a national list, this time being named one of “9 Fairy Tale Small Towns in Louisiana” by World Atlas.

While the title may sound whimsical, the recognition highlights something that has very real economic value: Opelousas has a story that people want to experience.

In its August 7 article, World Atlas describes Opelousas as a music and food destination with deep Creole and Cajun roots. The publication specifically points to the city’s identity as the “Zydeco Capital of the World” and “Spice Capital,” while highlighting the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival, Creole Heritage Folklife Center and Le Vieux Village Heritage Park and Museum.

For economic development, that recognition provides another opportunity to market what makes Opelousas and St. Landry Parish different.
“Our culture is an economic asset,” said Janece Riser, Operations Director for St. Landry Economic Development. “You cannot duplicate the history, music, food and traditions that exist here. When an outside publication recognizes those qualities, it gives us another tool to tell the story of Opelousas and St. Landry Parish to potential businesses, investors, residents and visitors.”

The recognition also reinforces the importance of downtown revitalization and preserving the character that makes Opelousas unique.

“The things that make Opelousas special are the very things we want to protect and build upon,” said Lena Charles, Chair of the Opelousas Downtown Development District. “Our historic downtown, local businesses, culture and community events all contribute to the experience people have when they visit Opelousas. That experience creates opportunities for our businesses and encourages people to come back.”

For economic development, those opportunities extend beyond tourism. A community with a strong identity can help attract residents, support local businesses, encourage downtown investment and give prospective companies another reason to consider the area.

World Atlas’ recognition places Opelousas alongside eight other Louisiana communities known for their distinctive landscapes, history, traditions and cultural experiences. The publication's conclusion notes that these smaller communities demonstrate how much of Louisiana’s identity exists beyond its largest cities, specifically pointing to Opelousas’ zydeco culture as an example.

For St. Landry Parish, that is an important message.

Our history and culture are not simply things from our past. They are assets we can use to build our future.
