Opelousas has once again found itself on a national “best of” list, with World Atlas naming the city one of the “9 Best Places to Call Home in Louisiana in 2026.”

The recognition adds to a growing list of distinctions bringing outside attention to Opelousas and its unique combination of history, culture, affordability and quality of life. World Atlas highlights Opelousas as the Zydeco Capital of the World and points to the city’s deep cultural roots, historic character and locally owned businesses as part of what makes it stand out.

For economic development professionals, recognition like this has significance beyond simply being a good headline. Communities compete every day for businesses, workers, entrepreneurs, visitors and residents. The ability to demonstrate that a community is an attractive place to live is an important part of that competition.

“Economic development is about creating opportunities, but it is also about creating a community where people want to be,” said Janece Riser, Operations Director for St. Landry Economic Development. “When an outside organization recognizes Opelousas for the qualities that make it a great place to call home, it gives us another tool to use when we are telling our story to businesses, investors and potential residents. We know the strengths of this community, and it is encouraging to see others recognizing them as well.”

For the City of Opelousas, the recognition reinforces the importance of preserving the community’s identity while continuing to invest in its future.

“There is a lot to be proud of when you call Opelousas home,” said Mayor Julius Alsandor. “Our history and culture are a big part of who we are, but so are the people who live here and continue to invest their time, talents and businesses in this community. Being recognized as one of the best places to call home is a reflection of that pride and the work being done to make Opelousas an even better place for the next generation.”

The recognition also has value for the local business community. A community’s reputation can influence where people choose to live, where entrepreneurs choose to open businesses and where companies choose to invest.

Lori Dupuis, President and CEO of the St. Landry Chamber of Commerce, said the recognition helps reinforce a message the local business community has been working to promote.

“When people choose where they want to live, they are also choosing where they will shop, work, raise their families and become involved in the community,” Dupuis said.

“Opelousas has a tremendous story to tell, and recognitions like this help us share that story with people who may not know us yet. That is good for our businesses and good for St. Landry Parish.”

This is not the first time World Atlas has placed Opelousas in the spotlight. The publication recently included Opelousas among its “9 Fairy-Tale Small Towns in Louisiana,” recognizing the city’s historic charm and distinctive character.

While national lists should never replace the work of local economic development organizations, they can provide valuable third-party exposure. They give communities another opportunity to showcase their assets and start conversations with people who may be considering where to live, visit, open a business or invest.

For Opelousas, the latest World Atlas distinction is another reminder that the community’s greatest economic development assets are not limited to buildings, infrastructure and available sites. Its people, culture, history, affordability and quality of life are economic development assets, too.

And when those qualities begin receiving recognition outside the community, it gives Opelousas another reason to tell its story and to tell it proudly.
